Tax season brings its fair share of chaos. Pop-up tax shops appear overnight, flashy ads promise quick refunds, and software companies claim they can handle everything in minutes. With so many options, choosing a tax preparer you can truly trust can feel overwhelming. One thing remains constant, however: No matter who prepares your return, you are responsible for its accuracy—so choosing wisely is essential.
1. Start with the Basics: Credentials and PTIN
If you’re paying someone to prepare your federal tax return, they must have a valid IRS-issued preparer tax identification number (PTIN). This is a legal requirement, not a courtesy. A PTIN confirms the preparer is registered with the IRS and authorized to prepare returns for compensation. If a preparer refuses to share their PTIN or doesn’t include it on signed returns, that’s a clear red flag.
Credentials also matter. Certified public accountants (CPAs), enrolled agents (EAs), and tax attorneys undergo rigorous training and testing—and, importantly, they can represent you before the IRS if questions or issues arise.
