North Shore Chicago Memorial Day Festivities

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.  Read on for North Shore Chicago Memorial Day Festivities this weekend.

The holiday typically marks the start of the summer vacation season. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

WINNETKA: Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony

The Winnetka Park District and the Village of Winnetka invite residents to the annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30. The Parade begins at 10 a.m. on the corner of Glendale and Elm, and ends with a ceremony at the Village Green. In case of rain, an indoor ceremony will be held in the auditorium at Skokie School.

NORTHBROOK: Memorial Day Parade 2016

Northbrook will hold its Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 28. The parade will step off at 10:30 a.m. from the corner of Cherry and Western, head east to Church and Shermer and continue on Shermer west to Meadow. Free Popsicles after the ceremony at the American Legion Post 791 on Shermer (while supplies last).

GLENVIEW: Glenview Remembers on Memorial Day

Honor the memory of all who died in wars fought by American forces at the 2016 Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony on Monday, May 30, organized by Joseph M. Sesterhenn American Legion Post 166.

This year’s parade starts at 10 a.m. (an hour later than previous years). It steps off at Depot and Grove streets, heads east to Pine Street, then south to Glenview Road and east to the Veterans Memorial at River Drive, where the ceremony will take place.

Village President Jim Patterson will speak and offer a proclamation. Post member and 2015 Citizen of the Year A.C. “Ace” Realie is the keynote speaker. Also participating will be the Glenview Fire Department and Post 166 Color Guards, local Boy and Girl Scouts and the Glenbrook South High School Titan Marching Band.
