Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.  Read on for North Shore Chicago Memorial Day Festivities this weekend.

The holiday typically marks the start of the summer vacation season. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

Like communities across the country, you will find innumerable celebrations with parades and more.

Historical Fun Facts:

The history of Memorial Day in the United States is so controversial that it constitutes an area of research. At Columbus [Georgia] State University there is a Center for Memorial Day Research.[5] It, together with the University of Mississippi‘s Center for Civil War Research,[6] are excellent starting points for investigating the topic.

The practice of decorating soldiers’ graves with flowers is an ancient custom.[7] Soldiers’ graves were decorated in the U.S. before[8] and during the American Civil War.
